Texture That Matches, or Texture Done Right the First Time

Drywall texturing in Shreveport comes down to two very different jobs. The other is matching an existing texture on a repair, which is significantly harder, because you are not just applying a technique, you are reproducing another person's timing, pressure and compound consistency from years ago.

When You Need Texture Work

New walls that need to match the rest of the house

An addition or a removed wall leaves new drywall that has to blend with existing textured surfaces. Getting close is not enough, since the eye finds the transition line immediately.

Repairs that stand out

A patch that is structurally sound but visibly a different texture. This is the most common texture call we get, and it is usually the result of a previous repair that skipped the matching step.

Texture you have grown tired of

Heavy textures from earlier decades can be skimmed flat and refinished smooth, or replaced with a lighter contemporary knockdown. Smooth walls are the current preference in most remodels, and going from heavy texture to smooth is a skim-coat job rather than a spray job.

Walls that were never finished properly

Texture is sometimes used to hide poor taping. It works until the light hits it right. If the underlying finish is bad, adding texture on top postpones the problem instead of solving it, and we will say so.

Texture Types and How They Behave

Orange peel

A fine, even spatter sprayed on and left alone, resembling the skin of its namesake. It is forgiving, hides minor imperfections well, cleans reasonably easily and is the most common wall texture in newer Shreveport-area homes. It is also the easiest to match, which matters if you expect future repairs.

Knockdown

Sprayed heavier than orange peel, then flattened with a wide blade once the compound has set just enough to hold its shape but not enough to skin over. That window is short, and knocking down too early smears the pattern flat while too late leaves it untouched. Knockdown hides wall imperfections better than any other common texture, which is exactly why it appears on so many ceilings.

Skip trowel

Applied by hand with a trowel rather than sprayed, producing a broader, more irregular pattern with a slightly Mediterranean character. It is labor-intensive and therefore costs more, and because it is hand-applied, no two installers produce identical results. Matching an existing skip trowel is the hardest match in residential drywall.

Smooth, or Level 5

Not a texture at all but the absence of one, achieved with a full skim coat over the entire surface. It is the current preference in higher-end remodels and it is unforgiving: with nothing to hide behind, every joint, fastener and framing irregularity has to be right. It also shows scuffs more readily and is harder to repair invisibly later.

What Affects the Price

Texture application regionally runs $0.80 to $2.00 per square foot. Where you land depends on:

• Texture type. Orange peel is fastest. Knockdown adds the blade pass. Skip trowel is entirely hand-applied and costs the most per square foot.
• New application versus matching. Matching costs more because of the testing and adjustment cycle before any texture reaches your wall.
• Smooth or Level 5. Priced differently, since it is a skim coat across the full surface rather than a spray application.
• Removing existing texture first. Going from heavy texture to smooth requires skimming and sanding the old pattern flat, which is a separate operation.
• Masking burden. A finished room with trim, flooring, cabinets and fixtures takes far longer to protect than an empty shell.
